Your guide to Vehicle Road Tax in Ireland

Here is the official line from the Department of the environment.

All new cars registered from 1 July 2008 will have their motor tax rate
based on the CO2 emissions level. The new CO2 based system will not
apply to second-hand imports that were registered abroad prior to 2008.

New cars registered between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 will
initially have their motor tax charged on the basis of the existing
engine size (c.c.) system. However, a low CO2 emitting new car
registered between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 will have its motor
tax switched to the lower CO2 based motor tax rate on first renewal of
motor tax post 1 July 2008, when the new CO2 based system commences.
New cars which are registered in the first 6 months of 2008 whose tax
would be more under the new CO2 based system will continue to pay motor
tax on the basis of engine size (c.c.).

Here are the current tax rates for each of the bands.

Co2 Emission Bands G Co2/KM Motor Tax
A 0-120g €100
B 121 - 140g €150
C 141 - 155g €290
D 156 - 170g €430
E 171 - 190 g €600
F 191 - 225g €1,000
G 226g and over €2,000

Have a look at the cars section of this site to look at a specific car or if you want to see all cars in a particular band you can compare the full car list.

    Hi Jeanette,

That would depend on the engine size of your car. We have tables on this page http://www.vrtireland.com/2008/04/11/what-is-vrt/ that will give you the current VRT rate based on your engine and then the VRT rate after July based on the Co2 rate.

We would recommend contacting the department of revenue or looking at their information leaflet on VRT( http://www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/leaflets/vrt1.htm ) for further advice.

    Regards
    VRT Ireland
